Most Interesting Consumer Innovations of 2024

As an innovations services firm, I-8ighty6ix understands how crucial innovation is to companies because it fosters growth, enables adaptation to changes in the marketplace, and drives competitiveness. As a result, each year I-8ighty6ix scans the internet to identify the many innovations that have been created and appear to be market bound, to determine those that we believe will have significant impact. The criteria we use to evaluate these top innovations include:

  • Does it address an unmet need?
  • Is it a breakthrough innovation in that it will shake-up and may even replace the existing category leader?
  • Does it have the potential for significant monetization?

Below are what we consider some of the most interesting innovations of 2024.

Vehicle
Anyone who owns a car has experienced the clunky system of bringing their car to a dealership or auto repair shop with a problem and waiting hours or even days for them to manually check a vehicle to identify and report issues, and report what repairs are needed.

Thanks to UVeye Vehicle Inspection Systems, now you can just drive your car through a tunnel-like system, utilizing high-definition cameras and AI, that thoroughly examines the vehicle inside and out. Then, in just 30 seconds, you get a full condition report that identifies all problems or issues, and the recommended repairs.
airpods
It might have seemed an inevitable development, but your AirPods can now double as hearing aids. The FDA has cleared Apple’s software update that turns iPhones into clinical-grade hearing tests – similar to the ones audiologists perform – and AirPods Pro 2 into hearing aids, if the test determines that you have mild to moderate hearing loss.

With approximately 15% of American adults (37.5 million) ages 18 and over with some trouble hearing, the need is there, and the cost savings compared to a hearing aid are huge. It’s Apple’s latest foray into optimizing the potential health uses of its devices.
technology
While many see technology enabling a hyperconnected world, one company believes that society needs protected spaces from cellphones, too. That’s why Yondr was created, to make pouches into which phones can be locked away for a certain amount of time – such as during a concert or theater show – allowing owners to disconnect.

Interestingly, around 70% of Yondr’s business is from schools, whose leaders are worried about the impact of cellphone use in class. The Yondr Pouch is a simple fix to a problem never imagined but very real.
wedding
Since September, Ukrainian citizens have been able to get married in a most unusual way . . . via Diia, the country’s latest app, which has more than 20 million users. The system is simple, if not unromantic.

One partner proposes through the app, and the other is sent a notification. If the second party says yes within 14 days, the two agree on a date for an online wedding, complete with officiant.

It might sound like an austere way to profess one’s love, but it was designed to help many Ukrainian couples who are physically separated by Russia’s invasion of the country carry on with their lives.
TrueLoo
Every bowel movement contains clues about your health, which is why doctors often ask patients for stool samples.

Now, imagine if your bodily waste could be constantly monitored, tracked, and analyzed, creating a more holistic look at your health?

Introducing TrueLoo, a new AI-powered toilet seat that optically scans your stool and urine for concerning changes. It looks like a normal toilet seat, fits on your existing toilet bowl, and is currently used in more than 50 senior living facilities with data and alerts delivered in real time directly to care personnel in such facilities.
DermaSensor
When it comes to skin cancer, primary care physicians often struggle to distinguish between malignant lesions from non-malignant ones, while dermatologists are often overflowing with business so that appointments are hard-to-get and wait times are long.

Now, your family physician can rely on DermaSensor that uses optical spectroscopy – the deployment of light to analyze tissues – to promptly detect likely cancerous lesions at a rate similar to that of in-person dermatologists.
binoculars
Who needs curated bird books and field guides when you have Swarovski’s smart binoculars.

Given that birding is the most popular sport in the U.S., with over 51 million participants, these new AI smart binoculars will certainly be in demand as they can identify over 9,000 birds and other wildlife and are capable of taking 13 megapixel images and full HD videos. So, amp up your birding experience and see the world through new eyes.
canvas
It has never been easier to create online content. Videos, images, graphics, marketing copy – all can be made in a blink, few technical skills required, with Canva’s Magic Studio.

In its toolbox are Magic Switch for converting documents into presentations, Magic Grab for turning pictures of, say, a vase into a purse, Magic Media which creates videos from text prompts, and Brand Voice which writes on-brand copy.

Simply put, it’s about access and the making of design tools easier to use.
litter robot
People who have a pet cat – and there are 73.8 million of them in the U.S. – love them but don’t care so much for their poop or the smelly litterbox that they use.

Thankfully, the litterbox problem has finally been solved. Now, there’s a self-cleaning automated lavatory that is so technologically advanced that it detects a cat’s entrance and exit, traps and sorts its waste product, and deposits it into an odor-sealed compartment for later removal – no smell, no mess, no fuss.
